Signature Periodontal Examination
At Al-Fa Perio your oral health is very important to us and we believe the best way to achieve this is to properly and fully understand the basic foundation of your teeth, gums, jaw bones and mouth right from the beginning. Thereafter, we will be able to use the unique processes developed as part of our Signature Periodontal Examination to identify the most appropriate choices of treatment that will give you the most optimal and long lasting results.
If we are able to understand in comprehensive detail where on the spectrum of health you lie then we can create specific plans of action to help get your entire mouth back to health. We can then also formulate a Personalised Periodontal Post Treatment Program which will prevent any relapse from occurring.
The foundation in which the teeth lie forms the basis of any recommended treatment.
There are 3 steps to your journey to health:
1. A consultation to discuss your exact needs and requirements so that we can tailor any necessary periodontal treatment to achieve success for you.
2. An in-depth comprehensive detailed assessment of your teeth, gums and bone to fully understand the extent of disease present in your mouth.
3. A personalized treatment plan of action to restore your gums back to health. We work in close collaboration with your referring dentist to ensure that we can get the gums back to health so that your dentist can then restore your teeth in the correct manner. See Periodontal Treatment Planning for more information.
Aspects we look at during the assessment:
The Gums or Gingivae is where we tend to focus a large proportion of our assessment and diagnosis, as it is critical that the supporting architecture of your teeth and mouth is healthy. There are several things we assess and identify:
Pocketing – we use special technology to help us identify accurately the level of gum disease in your mouth. If you have pocketing it means that there is an area of infection which requires professional facilitation and cannot be addressed by home care alone.
Physical Appearance of the gums – we look for any color or structural differentials. This can give us an idea of where we need to focus our efforts.
Pain, tenderness and/or swelling – this gives us an indication of the origin of the infection.
As well as the gums we will also assess the other soft tissues in your mouth like cheeks, throat and tongue to assess for any pathology.
Movement, Drifting and/or Spacing – if you have any of these conditions it allows us to inform your dentist so that we can work out a corroborative treatment plan to build in preventative and stabilization measures so that your teeth do not have these types of movement post-treatment.
Extent of Mobility – this helps us to understand the level of damage that has already occurred.
Furcation Involvement – we need to identify areas that may be rapidly deteriorating and that are extremely difficult to keep clean. The furcation area is one of these highly compromised spaces. It is the space between the origin of the roots of the tooth and more often than not is in between 3 roots.
Infection or decay– this will form part of our collaborative treatment plan with your dentist so that any infection or caries in your teeth is promptly dealt with.
Although we do assess the dynamics of the way in which you eat, chew and speak we often work with your dentist to highlight any issues that may need to be addressed.
We also focus our examination of the final aesthetics of the teeth, gums and smile. To help us give you the optimal final outcome we use our Cosmetic Periodontal Assessment. Many times we have worked in close collaboration with your cosmetic dentist to achieve some stunning cosmetic results. A beautiful smile is not just cosmetically enhanced teeth; it is often a combination of the correct gingival architecture and proper lip support.
We facilitate the achievement of an aesthetic gum appearance that allows the teeth to give the illusion of correct alignment and position. We have a whole host of Cosmetic Periodontal Procedures that we can draw from to achieve your desired results.
Using the information collected in our clinical assessment we are able to then diagnose your condition and then use this to look into all possible viable treatment options. We also look into the prognosis of all the teeth in your mouth so that we can plan our treatment around sound teeth with good future prospect. We will then discuss this in depth with your to give you a full understanding as well as the specific fees associated with these options. We specialize in laser periodontology as we believe it is the most minimally intrusive of treatment options, giving extensive control with superior results.
We also create a customized report of all our findings to help your understanding further.
