The periodontist commonly uses this type of surgical procedures to allow for better cosmetics in cases where the aesthetics are compromised. We work collaboratively with the dentist who is designing the new smile to create the right gum conditions for the new smile. There are essential two categories of treatment involved here:
This is where the shape and form of the gums are altered to give a more enhanced look within the smile. It can be done very easily with the correct range of lasers. This requires a great deal of skill and precision work. However, due to minimal trauma caused by the use of lasers aesthetically
pleasing results can be obtained quickly and with improved healing.
This is a plastic surgery technique which is used to add on more gum to improve the appearance of the smile. This is particularly used where the gum has been lost to gum recession. This can be due to gum disease or other infections in the past that have resulted in the roots of the teeth being exposed. There is often horizontal bone loss also. The teeth can end up looking longer than normal with spaces developing between the teeth. This can end up looking very unsightly.
Successful treatment of recession-type defects is based on the use of predictable periodontal plastic surgery procedures.
